Developed in the early 1970s under a proposal from the U.S. Army, the Black Hawk filled the need for an advanced utility helicopter. The helicopter's blade tips are swept back 20 degrees, and the trailing edges have tabs to improve air flow. The blades are made of hollow titanium spars, honeycomb cores, and glass fiber leading edges sheathed in titanium. The fuel system is designed to be crashworthy to avoid damage by fire.
