Because of the administrative support offered by its sister organization, Helicopter Association International, HFI is able to use 100 percent of donated funds toward its twin missions of historic preservation and education.
Educate the Next Generation
HFI has three strategies to build the next generation of helicopter industry professionals:
- HFI annually offers up to 19 scholarships for aspiring pilots and maintenance technicians
- Each year at HAI HELI-EXPO, HFI offers a free program of mentoring panels so those interested in the rotorcraft industry careers can learn from experienced professionals
- To increase awareness of rotorcraft career opportunities among student pilots and maintenance technicians, HFI works to expand the number of high school and postsecondary schools that offer helicopter-specific courses or instruction
Improve Helicopter Safety
HFI is dedicated to eliminating fatalities, accidents, and incidents in the helicopter industry. One way we do this is by providing free rotorcraft safety education sessions at the HFI Rotor Safety Challenge, which is held each year in conjunction with HAI HELI-EXPO, the world’s largest helicopter trade show and exposition.
Another way in which HFI works to improve helicopter safety is the Land & LIVE Program, which educates pilots, operators, and first responders about precautionary landings. When the flight isn’t going well — because of weather, mechanical difficulties, pilot and crew illness, or any other reason — landing the aircraft is the right, safe thing to do.
Preserve the History of Vertical Flight
We are now in the process of losing the first generation of pioneers who explored the boundaries of vertical flight. HFI is committed to preserving their contributions and the rich history of rotorcraft development. Our archive contains oral histories and video interviews, historical documents, photos, manuals, and magazines and newspaper articles. Through your generous donations, these materials will be cataloged and digitized for access by students, researchers, and historians.
